Nguyen Huu Thien is an independent ecologist based in Can Tho City, stands in a wild undeveloped island close to the city. He is a leading expert in the ecology of the River Mekong and in 2009, the Mekong River Commission commissioned him and twenty other experts to conduct an environmental assessment of this series of eleven dams. The group advised to delay but weren't listened to. In an interview he said "The economy of the delta is based on two pillars, agriculture and fishing, and the delta is based on two foundations, the soil and the water. Foundations destroy the delta economy There are three things that threaten the region now: upstream development, internal industrialization in Vietnam and climate change."
