The Brocken spectre was seen at Craig Goch in the Cambrian Mountains, mid Wales Dafydd Wyn Morgan from the Cambrian Mountains Initiative CIC snapped it. The natural spectacle also called a Brocken bow or mountain spectre is created by the shadow of an observer cast in mid air on a cloud or fog bank. The sun shining behind the observer projects their shadow through the mist, as reported on What's The Jam. The person or spectre can look gigantic and at a considerable distance away. The magnification of the shadow is an optical illusion which makes it seem the same distance as faraway landmarks. The figure's head is also sometimes surrounded by a brightly glowing halo. Dafydd said: "It's an astounding feeling when it finally appears especially when your whole body creates a shadow. "It’s the perfect weather for spotting a Brocken Spectre in the Cambrian Mountains of Wales." The frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, the highest peak of the Harz Mountains in Germany, created a local legend from which the phenomenon gets its name.
