The lantern on the dome from the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, more commonly called the 'Duomo'. Florence, Italy. Started in 1296 based on Arnolfo di Cambio's design, but was not complete until 1436 when Filippo Brunelleschi engineered the dome. One of Italy's largest churches. The dome itself is octagonal, and uses a double shell design, made of sandstone and marble. Atop the lantern sits a copper ball and cross at it's peak.
