A photograph titled 'Spinning - A Highland Doorway', of an elderly woman sitting to thread her spinning wheel, taken by Colonel Joseph Gale (c 1835-1906) in 1884. A patterned blanket hangs up on the left of the photograph, perhaps one this woman has already made. This photograph was exhibited at the Photographic Society of Great Britain in 1884. Joseph Gale specialised in naturalistic photographs of rural life and figures in landscapes. He was one of the first members of the Linked Ring Brotherhood and was also a member of the Royal Photographic Society.
