(NYT8) TAIXING, China -- May 5, 2007 -- TOXIC-SYRUP-6 -- The brick building on the left contains factory floor of the Taixing Glycerine Factory, a township industry that manufactures glycerin, inks, and industrial detergent in April 2007. Diethylene glycol is an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in antifreeze. It is also a killer. And over the years, it has been loaded into all varieties of medicine -- cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs -- by counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste and other household products.
