(NYT5) TAIXIN, China -- May 5, 2007 -- TOXIC-SYRUP-3 -- The countryside of Taixing, in eastern China, near the Yangtze Delta and the small town of Hengxiang. Forty-six barrels of toxic syrup followed a path from a factory in Hengxiang to Panama. Diethylene glycol is an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in antifreeze. It is also a killer. And over the years, it has been loaded into all varieties of medicine -- cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs -- by counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste and other household products.
