(NYT4) PANAMA CITY, -- May 5, 2007 -- TOXIC-SYRUP-2 -- Poisoned medicine at a warehouse in Panama City, Panama in December 2006. Tainted cold medicine killed at least 100 people here. Diethylene glycol is an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in antifreeze. It is also a killer. And over the years, it has been loaded into all varieties of medicine -- cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs -- by counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste and other household products.
