The Nez Perce Indians are planting trees on their reservation and returning the prairie to the forest in Lapwai, Idaho as part of a carbon offset program. If the US adopts the Kyoto Protocol in its attempts to combat global warming, the Nez Perce will have a valuable commodity on their land. Agricultural land is converted back to woods in a process called aforestation. This farmer wanted the seven-acre field around his home to be wooded so the Nez Perce planted Ponderosa Pines in the tilled soil. ORG XMIT: anne@annesherwood.com
