(NYT32) LONDON -- Dec. 25, 2007 -- NONSTICK-GUM -- Gum pocks the sidewalk of Praed Street in London in October 2007. Governments in Britain spend an estimated $305 million a year cleaning up chewing gum. Because Professor Terence Cosgrove of Bristol University studies polymers -- the chemical compounds that, among other things, make plastics plastic and chewing gum chewy -- his was no idle dream. If he could find the right chemical mixture, the professor surmised, he could retain the chewy without the sticky. (Jonathan Player/The New York Times)
