(NYT19) COPPERHILL, Tenn. -- Dec. 13, 2007 -- TENN-COPPER-COMEBACK -- A house sits on a ridge outside Copperhill, Tenn., Dec. 4, 2007. From the late 1800s through the 1970s, Copperhill, Tenn., was one of the most poisonous places in the country thanks to copper mining and smelting. But since the 1990s, when a clean-up project began, the area has started to boom with restaurants, kayaking, rafting, hiking and biking, and it?s now a market for vacation and retirement homes.
