(NYT26) GUANGZHOU, China -- Dec. 7, 2007 -- CHINA-TRUCKS-POLLUTE -- Drivers are reflected in a mirror as they sit inside their trucks on a road on the edge of the interior of the city of Guangzhou, China, Dec. 6, 2007. Trucks are the mules of China's spectacularly expanding economy -- ubiquitous and essential, yet highly noxious. They burn diesel fuel contaminated with more than 100 times the pollution-causing sulfur that the United States allows in most diesel fuel. While car sales in China are growing even faster than truck sales, the trucks are by far the largest source of street-level pollution. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
