(NYT) MIDDLETOWN, N.J. -- Jan. 27, 2007 -- SUBURBAN-IMAM-5 -- Sheik Reda Shata with a teenager, Omar Mosad, during a youth class at a moque in Middletown, N.J., in December 2006. Little is more important to Shata than cultivating the faith of Muslim youth and helping them bridge traditional and modern ways. Seven months have passed since Shata moved to Middletown to lead a mosque of prosperous, settled immigrants. It is a world away from Bay Ridge, in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he toiled for almost four years, serving hundreds of struggling Muslims for whom America was still new.
