(NYT70) NEW YORK -- Sept. 11, 2001 -- TERROR-RDP-70 -- A lone police officer walks through soot Tuesday evening in lower Manhattan after parallel attacks on quintessential symbols of American financial and military power on Tuesday morning. Hijacked planes slammed into both towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan, and then a short time later another crashed into the Pentagon, outside Washington. Both of the 110-story towers at the World Trade Center collapsed some minutes apart about an hour later. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
