(NYT81) NEAR TUCSON, Ariz. -- Jan. 24, 2007 -- ARIZ-DEATHBED-PROMISE -- Richard Kane, with his son, Brian, and Richard's wife, Beth, hike to Chimney Rock near Tucson on Dec. 23, 2006, to leave some of their friend's ashes. On his deathbed, Charlie Whitmore, 79, got assurances from Richard Kane and other members of the Southern Arizona Hiking Club that they would honor his last request: spread his ashes on each of the club's 315 authorized peaks.
