(NYT13) NEW YORK -- January 22, 2007 -- MEXICAN-FOLK-ARTIST-2 -- Relatives of artist Martin Ramirez are overcome with emotion as they view his artwork for the very first time inside the American Folk Art Museum in Manhattan on Jan. 20, 2007. Martin Ramirez came from Mexico to the United States to make money to send to his wife and children but ended up homeless, confused and ultimately institutionalized for decades in a psychiatric institution in California. Today he is renowned in a slice of the art world for his obsessive, hypnotic drawings and collages evoking his psychological preoccupations and his upbringing in Mexico.
