Boeing has stumbled badly, ceding its decades-long-dominance in commercial aviation to Airbus and becoming mired in a string of scandals over Pentagon contracts. The terrorist attacks of 2001 depressed demand at a time when the company's product line paled against appealing new planes from Airbus.
