(NYT26) FALL RIVER, Mass. -- June 9, 2006 -- OPERATING-MUSIC -- Dr. Paul Ruggieri loads a CD player with a variety of music in the operating room at Charlton Hospital, in Fall River, Mass., Friday, June 9, 2006. Scalpel, suture, iPod. Like most of modern life, surgery has acquired a soundtrack, whether it be Sinatra or Vivaldi, Mozart or Bob Marley, "La Boheme" or the Beatles. Surgeons say it relaxes them, focuses the attention and helps pass the time. Mention of the subject in medical journals goes back 50 years, and a growing body of recent research shows mild benefits for the patient going under the knife as well as for the surgeon holding it.
