(NYT15) WASHINGTON -- Oct. 6, 2005 -- MIERS-CONFIRM -- Harriet Miers, President Bush's nominee to be a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, with Sen. Sam Brownback in his office on Capitol Hill, Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005. In an appearance on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America," Brownback, a Republican from Kansas, said there was a "good chance" he would vote against Miers if she said during Senate testimony that the high court's 1973 decision legalizing abortion nationwide was settled law. At center a statue of President Dwight Eisenhower. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
