(NYT8) GOLDEN MEADOW, LA -- November 14, 2005 -- SCI-STORMS-MARSH-5 -- A few trunks of oak trees, dead for over a century, stand as reminders on Oct. 20, 2005, that the saltwater marsh that gave the Golden Meadow community in Louisiana its name was once a fresh water habitat. It is practically an article of faith in Louisiana that if the state's marshes had not been allowed to deteriorate over the years, New Orleans and other flooded areas would have been preserved from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
