(NYT11) HOUSTON -- Sept. 25, 2005 -- RITA-HOUSTON -- On highway I-45 South headed into Houston, a convey of school buses loaded with people made their way back into the city on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005. More than 2.5 million Houston residents fled town ahead of Hurricane Rita, creating a monster of a traffic jam. Now that Rita is history, they are starting to make their return. Hurricane Rita, which passed through the Gulf region on Saturday, caused far less damage than officials had feared, and there were no reported deaths connected to the storm.
