(NYT27) NEW YORK -- March 2, 2005 -- GARDEN-SOIL-3 -- Christine Datz-Romero, a founder of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, explains the work of worms at the Union Square Greenmarket in February. For the last 30 years, even as organic gardening grew from a fringe movement to a mainstream pastime, the science of soil has remained the province of microbiologists and plant pathologists, along with a few gardening geeks. But now there is an increasing awareness, even among casual weekend gardeners, that soil has an enormous effect on the success, or failure, of their gardens. (Andrea Mohin/The New York Times)
