(NYT39) PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Feb. 23, 2005 -- ATWOOD-COSTUMES-4 -- The living area in Colleen Atwood's home in Pacific Palisades, Calif., has Italian leather armchairs from American Rag on La Brea Avenue. Atwood in her mid-50s, is among Hollywood's leading costume designers, known for her mastery of everything from Westerns to period pieces to science fiction. Her work has earned five Academy Award nominations, and she won an Oscar two years ago for the exuberant 1920s outfits worn by Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere in "Chicago." This year she is nominated for the macabre and fantastical attire in "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events." (Paxton/The New York Times)
