(NYT40) MIAMI -- January 31, 2005 -- IRAQ-ELECT-U.S.-2 -- At a Miami Beach coffee shop Monday, January 31, 2005, John Davis, a Vietnam veteran in Miami who said he was permanently disabled after injuries suffered during that war, and that the weekend's events reaffirmed a belief he has clung to fiercely ever since Vietnam: that the United States has a responsibility to instill democracy worldwide. In interviews around the country on Monday, many Americans voiced surprise and at least some satisfaction about the apparent smoothness of the proceedings, which brought out millions of Iraqi voters. But most were consistent in saying the elections did not change their fundamental views of their country's involvement in Iraq. (Barbara P. Fernandez/The New York Times)
