(NYT14) WASHINGTON -- February 18, 2005 -- Adv. for Sunday, Feb. 20 -- CHAMBER-OF-COMMERCE -- Thomas J. Donohue, President and CEO of the United States Chamber of Commerce, in his Washington office on Feb. 16, 2005. When President Bush signed the Class Action Fairness Act into law last Friday, February 18, 2005, at a White House ceremony, Donohue, had a front-row seat. Donohue and his troops had been fighting for such a change for years. The new legislation will push class-action cases out of state courts, which are often more accommodating to such lawsuits, and into federal courts. (Carol T. Powers/The New York Times)
