(NYT38) UNDATED -- Feb 6, 2005 -- SUBARU-DESIGN-2 -- An undated photo of the Subaru R1E. Can a Subaru be too pretty? The Japanese company, always known more for durability than for aesthetics, is trying to move upscale, and that means it is struggling to find a new look. Its hot new designer spent time at BMW and Alfa Romeo, which may explain the Alfa-like grille (it looks somewhat like a guitar pick, or the planchette that sits atop an Ouija board) on the nose of the new top-line Subaru, the B9 Tribeca.
