(NYT58) NEW YORK -- April 5, 2005 -- WTC-COLLAPSE -- Shyam Sunder, lead investigator in the National Institute of Standards and Technology study of the World Trade Center collapse, at the Crowne Plaza Times Square in Manhattan, April 5, 2005. After more than two years of intensive research, investigators uncovered what they said was an elementary shortcoming in the two towers at the trade center: neither building had enough staircases to meet any of the major building codes in the country, including New York City's.
