(NYT27) WASHINGTON -- Feb. 21, 2005 -- SOCSEC-MCRERY -- Rep. Jim McCrery (R-La.) in his office in Washington in February. When McCrery raised questions about President Bush's plan to overhaul Social Security, the White House quickly put the squeeze on him. Four of the president's men descended on McCrery's Capitol Hill office, surrounding the unassuming Louisiana Republican with charts and figures in a fevered effort to get him to spout the company line. The visit from White House officials is testimony to the growing influence of McCrery, a little-known lawmaker who has emerged, seemingly out of nowhere, as a central figure in the Social Security debate.
