(NYT14) NAPLES, Fla. -- June 12, 2004 -- FLA-EVERGLADES-2 -- Heavey equipment machinery extracts limestone rock from Jesse James Hardy's property in Naples, Fla., in June .It is hard to believe the state of Florida would offer $4.5 million for his 160 scrubby acres in its southwestern corner, and perhaps harder to believe that Hardy, a 68-year-old with prostate cancer and little income, would turn the money down. But both things happened recently, and now, a showdown is brewing. (Barbara P. Fernandez/The New York Times)
