(NYT26) WEST SENECA, N.Y. -- June 11, 2004 -- ADV. FOR JUNE 13 -- SPRAY-ON-TANS-2 -- Dan Humiston, owner of the Tanning Bed chain, 39 stores total, with a tanning bed at his original location in West Seneca, N.Y., about 10 miles south west of Buffalo, in June 2004. Humiston is the President of the Indoor Tanning Association. Consumers are increasingly eschewing the classic fake-and-bake approach to an artificial tan -- bathing beneath UV lamps that mimic both the positive and negative effects of sun exposure -- and choosing the spray-on version. Advocates of the ultraviolet tan are beginning to feel the heat. (Dan Cappellazzo/The New York Times)
