(NYT34) BRYCE NATIONAL PARK, Utah -- June 17, 2004 -- SUMMER-SERVICE -- Sierra Club leader Suzanne Valencia swings a polaski at Bryce National Park Utah, June 13th, 2004. Participants in this service vacation camp and work in the park for a week. For some people, a dream vacation involves no labor harder than balancing a paper umbrella on the rim of a tall glass. But, under the auspices of the Sierra Club and accompanied by a group leader, six volunteers, most of them eminently sensible-seeming people, paid $395, plus airfare, for the privilege of spending a week performing back-breaking or mind-numbing tasks to help fix up the park.
