(NYT34) NAPLES, Fla. -- June 8, 2004 -- FLA-EVERGLADES -- Jesse Hardy takes a morning walk on a road that leads to his home, June 4, 2004 near Naples. Florida wants Hardy's land for a huge replumbing of the Everglades and is offering $4.5 million for his 160 scrubby acres. Hardy, a 68-year-old with prostate cancer and little income, has turned the money down. "I will not sign for them to take my home,'' Hardy said on Sunday. (Barbara P. Fernandez/The New York Times)
