(NYT27) BAQUBA, Iraq -- June 24, 2004 -- IRAQ-7 -- A U.S. soldier kicks a weapon that was destroyed by U.S. soldiers on the grounds of a school in the Sunni Triangle town of Baquba, Iraq, Thursday, June 24, 2004. Fighting raged in five cities across Iraq on Thursday as suspected Sunni Muslim insurgents unleashed a surge of coordinated attacks that killed at least 105 people and wounded hundreds more, as masked insurgents battled American and Iraqi security forces in what several officials said could be the opening salvo in a violent push to derail the June 30 transfer of sovereignty.
