(NYT39) HOUSTON -- June 2, 2004 -- TEXAS-MODERNIST -- The renovated home of John and Dominique de Menil in Houston on May 20, 2004. In the fashionable Houston neighborhood of River Oaks, with its antebellum mansions and Tudor piles surrounded by manicured lawns, the de Menils built a long, flat-roofed one-story home of brick, steel and glass. It was designed by Philip Johnson, then a 42-year-old disciple of Mies van der Rohe. (Michael Stravato/The New York Times)
