(NYT4) SDEROT, Israel -- May 2, 2004 -- MIDEAST -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon casts his vote during a referendum of his Likud party in the southern Israeli city of Sderot, Sunday May 2, 2004. Sharon's Likud Party rejected his plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank on Sunday, media polls indicated, an eembarrassing defeat for the premier. The referendum left the future of Sharon's "unilateral disengagement" from the Palestinians in doubt, and its defeat could precipitate a major political crisis. (Rina Castelnuovo/The New York Times)
