(NYT56) RIVEREDGE, N.J. -- Oct. 21, 2004 -- AUTISM-FAMILIES-6 -- Gina Krieger, who is 8 years old and autistic, in a dance class in Riveredge, N.J. on October 11, 2004. Gina's mother, Lisa, watches her in the background. Lisa Krieger's planning of Gina's communion made possible what most parents take for granted: a child's participation in family activities and community events. These activities do not come naturally to children with autism, a mysterious brain disorder that affects the ability to communicate, form relationships, tolerate change and otherwise respond appropriately to the outside world.
