(NYT75) NAJAF, Iraq -- Oct. 20, 2004 -- IRAQ-REVIEW-III-2 -- An Iraqi national guardsman, wounded when Americans came under heavy fire in August during a search in Najaf, Iraq, was taken to a forward operating base for treatment. Iraq's U.S. civilian administrator, L. Paul Bremer's disbanding of the Iraqi Army still casts a shadow over the occupation of Iraq. The American military had been counting on using Iraqi soldiers to help rebuild the country and impose order along its borders. Instead, as a violent insurgency convulsed the nation, overstretched United States forces found themselves deprived of a way to put an Iraqi face on the occupation. (Tyler Hicks/The New York Times)
