(NYT62) NEW YORK -- Oct. 8, 2003 -- ARMSTRONG-HOME-13 -- A painted portrait of Louis Armstrong by singer Tony Bennett adorns the wall in the den of the home of Louis and Lucille Armstrong in Corona, Queens, N.Y., as seen on Oct. 6, 2003. Armstrong's house, which opens as a museum next week, is more than a shrine to the most influential figure in jazz history. It is a record of a well-to-do 20th-century Queens household - exuberant, yes -- but not pretentious. (Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times)
