(NYT15) NEW YORK -- Sept.. 28, 2003 -- OBIT-GIBSON -- Althea Gibson being greeted by her mother Daniel Gibson, after her plane landed at Idlewild Airport -- later re-named John F. Kennedy airport -- in New York, on July 9, 1957 . Gibson had just returned after winning Wimbeldon on July 6, 1957. Gibson, the daughter of a South Carolina sharecropper who became the first black champion at Wimbledon, died Sunday. She was 76. (The New York Times)
