(NYT32) BAGHDAD, Iraq -- March 14, 2003 -- IRAQ-BAGHDAD -- Iraqi jockeys suited up on Friday, March 14, 2003, at the Amiriya racetrack in Baghdad. Friday was the Muslim day of rest, and about 5,000 people attended the races. War anxieties rise and fall daily here, often in response to the latest snippet of news from the United Nations. But on one sunny afternoon at the track, as at many other gathering places across Baghdad, the mood was one of almost surreal calm, of everyday concerns that seemed to push thoughts of cruise missiles and smart bombs and helicopter-borne assault forces into the back of people's minds -- or at least into the hinterland of what they were prepared to say.
