(NYT36) LORMAN, Miss. -- March 11, 2003 -- MISS-COLLEGE-RUSSIANS-2 -- Alcorn State University, a tiny, historically black campus tucked away in the lush green isolation of southwestern Mississippi, is home to a thriving pod of students from Russia. Alcorn's president looks at his Russian students and sees hope for the kind of racial diversity that he has long desired for Alcorn. Benny Crawford, 25, Dmitryi Chernyshev, 18, and Norris Lee Jones, 25, hang out at a party at Chernyshev's trailer. "They don't think of us as white, they think of us as Russians, Chernyshev said about his new American friends at Alcorn State University. (Jaclyn McCabe/The New York Times)
