(NYT16) MITCHELL, S.D. -- March 8, 2003 -- SD-IRAQ-VOICES-3 -- Mitchell, South Dakota is a deeply patriotic place, yet one governed by the pragmatism of people whose livelihood depends on the fickle weather. There is a prairie populism threading through the remote rural towns that makes many people in South Dakota question international entanglements. And while South Dakota is isolated by geography, the military call-ups for a possible U.S.-led war against Iraq have brought this conflict very close to home. South Dakota ranks third among the states for the percentage of residents enrolled in the National Guard, with 58 percent; and 35 percent of its 4,500 troops have been activated or put on alert so far. Bruce Fritzemeier, left, and Curt Talley talking at a pancake meal at United Methodist Church, March 4, 2003, in Mitchell, S.D. Talley says he is not convinced of the need to invade Iraq.
