(NYT11) SEATTLE -- March 8, 2003 -- MODEST-PHILANTHROPIST -- Seattle is one of the centers of the New Philanthropy, a gusher of money from relatively young people who did well and now want to do good. The largest is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with an endowment of more than $21 billion, and a staff of about 100 people. Priscilla Bullitt Collins, 82, is also a new philanthropist, but a different kind: She did not start giving away money until she was in her 70s. The money came from the 1991 sale of King Broadcasting, founded by Collins' mother, Dorothy Bullitt. Bullitt died in 1989, leaving a broadcasting empire with stations in four states. Collins, who has quietly given away more than $100 million, has only one strict condition -- none of this largess will ever bear her name. "I don't want my name on anything." Collins at home in Seattle with an old family album, in Feb. 2003. (Anna Mia Davidson/The New York Times)
