(NYT51) MARLBORO TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- March 13, 2003 -- NJ-LEADER-RESIGN -- State Senator John O. Bennett, who as the Senate co-president is the top-ranking Republican officeholder in New Jersey, came under attack Thursday, March 13, 2003, from the party chairman in his home county, who said he would not support Bennett for re-election in light of news reports of improprieties in Bennett's law practice. Bennett resigned Thursday night as the attorney for Marlboro Township, saying that he had been the target of a smear campaign by The Asbury Park Press and that any irregularities were inadvertent.
