(NYT27) NEW YORK -- March 8, 2003 -- BROADWAY-STRIKE-2 -- Members of the musicians union play their instruments as supporting union locals -- including Actors Equity -- picket in front of Urinetown on 43rd Street, Saturday, March 8, 2003. The two sides in the Broadway labor battle -- the producers and the musicians union -- do not agree on much, and as of Saturday morning, March 8, 2003, they remained far apart on the divisive issue of how many musicians should play in an orchestra pit. Both sides and many Broadway observers do agree on one thing: It all went terribly wrong terribly quickly. At 5 p.m., Friday, Local 1 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the powerful Broadway stagehands' union, made a surprise announcement that its members would honor the musicians' picket lines, effectively shutting down every musical on Broadway.
