(NYT47) NEW YORK -- Sept. 8, 2003 -- 9-11-VIGNETTES-I -- With ground zero as their front yard, the residents of 125 Cedar Street in lower Manhattan have developed a low tolerance for the constant procession -- tourists, construction workers, dignitaries, vendors hawking DVDs of the attacks -- that rolls by night and day. On Aug. 28, 2003, Andy Jurinko looks out on ground zero from the kitchen of the third-floor apartment that he shares with his wife, Patricia Moore. Residents had to wait for 15 months before they were permitted to return to their homes. (Suzanne DeChillo/The New York Times)
