(NYT12) VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Sept. 7, 2003 -- FLA-GRAPEFRUIT-MARKETING -- Florida's grapefruit growers are in deep trouble. Unlike the state's $8 billion orange industry, which has also suffered but can rely on a steady demand for orange juice, its $1 billion grapefruit industry is combating double-digit domestic sales declines that have put many small farmers out of business. Growers are gambling on a $3 million marketing campaign that they hope will transform grapefruit juice from the dutiful tonic of old people into the must-have drink for hip, health-conscious young women. Dan Richey, a member of the Florida Citrus Commission, checks his latest crop of grapefruit still ripening on the trees near his house, in background, near Vero Beach, Fla., Sept. 4, 2003.
