(NYT9) FORT KNOX, Ky. -- Sept. 21, 2003 -- ARMY-RECRUIT -- The slumping American economy has proved to be a huge boon to the Army's efforts to recruit the 100,000 enlisted soldiers it needs this year to fill its active-duty and reserve ranks, senior Army officials say. All the armed services say they will meet or exceed their recruiting goals for the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30. But many experts say the Army's recruiting efforts remain more vulnerable over time because the Army recruits more active-duty and reserve troops than all the other services combined. Major General Michael D. Rochelle, Commanding General United States Army Recruiting Command in his office at Ft. Knox, Ky. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003. (Stan Denny/The New York Times)
