(NYT32) HUDSON, Fla. -- Sept. 2, 2003 -- IRAQ-CASUALTIES-2 -- Not long after President Bush declared an end to the major fighting in Iraq, Jessica Porter of Hudson, Fla., hatched an ambitious plan: she would make a quilt for every family of an American soldier killed in the war. There were fewer than 150 back then, and Jessica, a resolute 19-year-old, had no doubt that she and a few friends could get the job done. Porter has been sewing until her hands ache, but she is not nearly fast enough to keep up with the death toll. Porter, in background, with some of the patriotic material she uses for the quilts she makes at home in Hudson, Fla., Aug. 28, 2003. (David Kadlubowski/The New York Times)
