(NYT11) SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. -- Sept. 1, 2003 -- CALIF-SHARKS-2 -- A handful of white sharks, which can grow to more than 20 feet long and have long been feared as the oceans' fiercest predator, appear to have found a home in San Clemente, Calif., just off San Onofre State Beach, a popular spot for surfers, some of whom say they have had extremely close encounters with the beasts. Curious onlookers search for signs of sharks from a bluff above San Onofre State Beach, Aug. 31, 2003. (Robert Galbraith/The New York Times)
