(NYT40) NEW YORK -- August 26, 2003 -- STEINWAY-GERMANY-2 -- In 1850, when piano maker Henry E. Steinway left for New York, four of his five sons immigrated with him, but the fifth, C.F. Theodor Steinway, stayed behind. The piano factory in both Astoria, Queens was aided by Theodor's laboratory, part factory in in Hamburg. Steinway & Sons still makes pianos in Hamburg, though they are a bit different from their American cousins. Templates used to check the size of the grain of the wood at the Steinway Piano factory in Queens. (Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times)
